SOUND MADE PUBLIC WORK BAM.jpg
The Brooklyn Academy of Music has established itself over the last 150 years as one of the leading performance spaces in the world. We helped clarify BAM’s needs and discovered the opportunities in using audio, a sharable and archivable medium, to enrich their programs.

The Brooklyn Academy of Music approached SOUND MADE PUBLIC to create and develop an ongoing audio record and series, with the intention of taking the performances beyond the walls of BAM and building a global audience while creating an archive.

We worked internally with the team to help define the series in relation to their brand and their highly sophisticated audience. Audio was an affordable and dynamic approach to both expanding the audience and inviting the existing audience into the fantastic talent that BAM draws to its renowned institution.

BAM has established itself over the last 150 years as one of the leading performance spaces in the world, bringing to prominence groundbreaking creative talent, in the performing arts.

In our conversations, we helped clarify BAM’s needs and discovered the opportunities in using audio, a sharable and archivable medium, to enrich the programs they had.

The idea for the series was to both get a deeper understanding of the performers and also understand the context of the performances. The approach was two fold: In some cases, we created an intimate conversation with such luminaries as choreographer Mark Morris, poet and translator Anne Carson, and playwright David Hare. In other cases, we created mini documentaries to deepen the experience of a play or an event: One on Oscar Wilde and another on Martin Luther King, Jr., with various intellectuals reflecting on their life and work, offering a profound and engaging understanding of these seminal figures in our cultural landscape. Over the course of the series, SOUND MADE PUBLIC interviewed  Darryl Pinkney, Mark Morris, Angelique Kidjo, Anne Carson, John Ashbery, David Hare, Walter Mosley, Nelson George, Rudy Crew, Joe Mulillo, Liesl Schillinger, Duncan Wall and Sharon Lehner.
